Egyptian painting progress

I'm currently working on a piece for Cactus Gallery's upcoming Bug themed show: I'm doing a piece about egyptian scarabs...

Original concept:

First pass (end of first day) Her skin had a blue undertone- wish I had taken a pic of it then, since it looked cool. Tweaked composition to match square wood panel, and am adding in an egyptian styled background:

Second pass (end of second day): Still figuring out what to do with the border space (black? spray gold? papyrus paper?).

Stay tuned for tonight's progress!

colored spooky girl

Hey I submitted the sketch and ink of this for the sketchbook, but I couldn't help myself but finish it up just for my own purposes.... Except I'm not 100% happy with it yet, so any critique you have for me would be appreciated! :D thanks

Belly Dancers

Posted this to my lifedrawing blog but I thought I'd post it here too.
I went to a belly dancing show yesterday put on by one of my bf's friends, and realized how much I missed life drawing, so I rustled up some paper...

GDG Artist Spotlight: Jay Fabares

This week, we talk to GDG's Jay Fabares, another one of our newest members! She's already posted some wonderful drawings up here to the blog, and we'll definitely be seeing her work in one of GDG's many upcoming projects!

Welcome to the Girls Drawin Girls Spotlight, Jay!

1. What's your name?
Jay Fabares (Fab-RAY)

2. Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?
Grew up in the Bay Area, in Fremont, Ca. Then I lived in the San Diego county for 7 years.
Now I live in the Burbank area.

3. What do you do for a living when you're not drawing sexy pinups?
Mostly I am a freelance artist.

4. What's your favorite medium to work in?
Pencil. Sketching is the 1st essence of drawing and I feel that nothing can replace that feel of pencil to paper.

5. Why do you think the pinup girl has such a timeless, wide appeal?
There's nothing like a woman to grab your attention.
Guy or girl, you notice when a women is selling something.

6. Define what "sexy" means to you.
There's a lot of things that I find 'sexy' and a lot of other girls have touched upon those things... strength, confidence, etc. For me, I think knowledge and common sense is sexy.

7. What's your biggest goal/ambition as an artist?
My biggest ambition as an artist is to make stories, like comics, or children's stories. My biggest goal is to continue making a living doing what I love, which is drawing. I really feel like these are two separate things!

8. Why do you like drawing ladies?
Ladies are hard to draw. It's a challenge to make a lady look interesting and original. Men have very distinct features, I love the subtle nuances of women that make them unique.

9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
It's been a childhood dream to visit Africa and Australia. But I would also like to visit Switzerland.

10. Name three artists who have influenced you and/or you admire.
Richard Scarry, Preston Blair, and Gyo Fujikawa are the artists from my childhood, and were probably the biggest impact creating my love for visual arts and illustrations.

GDG Artist Spotlight: Kali Fontecchio

This week, we talk to GDG's Kali Fontecchio, one of our newest members! She's already posted some AWESOME drawings up here to the blog, and we'll definitely be enlisting her talents for one of GDG's many upcoming projects!

Welcome to the Girls Drawin Girls Spotlight, Kali!

1. What's your name?
My full name is, Kali Lomasi Fontecchio! Sometimes, Kali "Two Sheds" Fontecchio.

2. Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?
I'm originally from El Segundo California! Now I live in...BURBANK California! Big move.

3. What do you do for a living when you're not drawing sexy pinups?
Storyboards, layouts and character designs!

4. What's your favorite medium to work in?
Markers! I looooooooove markers. I love watercolor and cel paint too, but markers are easy and breezy.
5. Why do you think the pinup girl has such a timeless, wide appeal?
Since the beginning of time, pinups have bestowed men boners. What a funny thing some organized lines on a piece of paper can do!

6. Define what "sexy" means to you.
Something that gets your pheromones stirring! But specifically it means something that's arousing. What do I find sexy? The song "Faster and Faster" by Devo more then anything else on the planet.

7. What's your biggest goal/ambition as an artist?
To make others happy (and myself). Fun, and happy pretty things!

8. Why do you like drawing ladies?
Ladies are the prettiest creatures that have ever existed! I love to draw the pretty, they deserve it!

9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Four places: Japan, Ireland, Iceland and Italy!

Japan definitely because of the art and fashion (and amazing swap meets I've heard about). Ireland for its gorgeous landscape and endless green hills. Iceland because of their hot springs and modern seaside towns. And lastly Italy, specifically the town of Fontecchio, which has some of Italy's oldest fountains and clocks!

10. Name three artists who have influenced you and/or you admire.
John Kricfalusi, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Mel Crawford!

Sneak Peak From Volume 3

Here's a sneak peak of one of my pieces that will be in the Volume 3 art book available at San Diego Comic Con 2010. I chose cheesecake for my theme and in this piece I wanted to highlight citrus cheesecake. I kind of went for the 1960's sort of color scheme. Enjoy!

I will be moving to Minneapolis in April and I was wondering if any Girls here are currently, or have lived there! So far I've heard that it's an awesome art scene (compared to where I am now, anyways!)

Doki Doki Go - WIP

Been working on this during my sparse free time. I posted more of my progress shots over on my blog :D

GDG Artist Spotlight: Mary Bellamy

This week, we talk to GDG's Mary Bellamy (aka "Zorilita"), who will be featured in our upcoming Girls Drawin Girls Volume III: Sugar and Spice, for her interpretation of Cheesecake, in addition to already having a collection of her artwork in GDG's Playing Cards!

Welcome to the Girls Drawin Girls Spotlight, Mary!

1. What's your name?
Mary Bellamy

2. Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?
I've lived in the Los Angeles area my whole life.

3. What do you do for a living when you're not drawing sexy pinups?
I'm illustrating my own children's graphic novels, doing character design and illustrations for clients and
doing comic strips for various anthology books.

4. What's your favorite medium to work in?
My favorite medium would have to be digital work in Photoshop and Flash. Though in traditional media, I love markers and colored pencils.

5. Why do you think the pinup girl has such a timeless, wide appeal?
I think pin up girls are popular since they can show a sensual side of femininity without going past certain limits and so many people do them as a sample of their style that it's become iconic to commercial art.

6. Define what "sexy" means to you.
Sexy to me is less about the graphic images we're fed in magazines and more about a softer gentler side of womanhood.  I think that implied things are more attractive and in some cases more innocent than many things that appear in comics or television so I usually obscure certain things in my work.

7. What's your biggest goal/ambition as an artist?
My biggest goal is to have my work appear on television or in mass merchandised form. I'd love to see my girls on tv since my work is less about princesses and more about girls that don't really fall into particular stereotypes. Toys are my other love, so I'd love to have my designs appear in stores. Right now I'm selling directly to conventions and customers.

8. Why do you like drawing ladies?
I like drawing ladies because they're more fun. You can't really do as much with fashion or hair with male characters and curvy lines make for more interesting designs in my opinion.

9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
If I could travel anywhere, I'd love to see Japan and Europe, maybe Ireland or Paris.

10. Name three artists who have influenced you and/or you admire.
I'm not really sure I can name three artists because I’m really influenced by so many things. I love Fauvism, Impressionism, Cubism and Mannerism. As for modern work, I love all sorts of graphical styles and the older Disney animations. I loved the 1980's girl's cartoons and later enjoyed some anime as well.

She's something.... Laika Phenomenon.

Hey everybody!! The art toy concept for my derby girl creation- Laika Phenomenon is up for voting at PatchTogether.com!

Click the pic to get taken to her voting page!

laika phenomenon

As far as I know there's no other derby toys/action figures/figurines on the market, especially one not as authentic- I tried putting as much detail as I can into the figure, from her mouthguard to her padding to the bloody band-aids and bruises. For those of you unfamiliar, this is actually my second figure with PatchTogether, my first- Miss Mary Jane, is due to be shipped at the end of the month. She's currently out of stock, but on her page you can vote to have her restocked. You can also see the quality of work the sculptors do and and how good of a job they've done with interpreting a 2D illustration into a 3D figurine. I still need votes to get it made, and then once it gets enough votes it'll be available for a discounted pre-order sight unseen while they sculpt it. Once it hits 20 or so pre-orders then they start sculpting and offer it at full price and will work with me on getting it to look perfect. I know with Miss Mary Jane it took about 6 revisions so they are very serious about doing the artwork justice. Then it will be on sale for about a month or two and then the sales will be closed and it will go into full production and ship out to customers. I'm hoping with the final product Laika will be about 8.5" tall with some sort of base.
I'll be sure to let you know when it goes up for sale as an actual toy. It hasn't been up a full 24 hours yet and is already at a third of the votes it needs. Every vote helps though! If Laika does especially well I might have to make up some teammates for her. ;D
