Welcome to the Girls Drawin Girls Spotlight, Paigey!
1. What's your name?
Paige Pumphrey, aka Paigey!
2. Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?
I grew up in Glen Burnie, Md., a suburb 10 minutes south of Baltimore. I moved to New York City in 2007 and currently live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
3. What do you do for a living when you're not drawing sexy pinups?
As of right now I work as a men's t-shirt designer in Times Square. Ultimately I'd love to go freelance as an illustrator.
4. What's your favorite medium to work in?
Pencil, paper, ink, Photoshop and Illustrator.
5. Why do you thinkthe pinup girl has such a timeless, wide appeal?
I think it's safe to say no one will ever not like looking at pretty girls. The definition of 'pretty' might warp and skew a little as time goes on, but everything comes back around. Especially now in the era of the internet, where so much information and exposure to artists old and new is so readily available. And artists of today always love to find some secret, obscure artist from back in the day they can use as their inspiration. It's all cyclical. Maybe some artists 40-50 years from now will see my stuff and be inspired.
6. Define what "sexy" means to you.
Confident, curvy women with an hourglass shape, who know how to accentuate and accessorize
7. What's your biggest goal/ambition as an artist?
I have a comic I plan on doing one day, called Pearly Whites. At it's core it's a monster story, peppered with lots of comedy, drama, punk rock, hip hop, social commentary, blood and Satan. I've been kicking around alot of the ideas for it since high school, when I used to be a GM for several tabletop sessions of Vampire: The Masquerade and Shadowrun. I've got notebooks and sketchbooks full of characters and plotlines dating back 10 years ago that I've compiled into one big, long epic story that I plan on doing one of these years. And then I'll sell the movie rights and the rest will be history.
8. Why do you like drawing ladies?
They're certainly one the easier things for me to draw, when I doodle pretty girls tend to be my 'default' subject matter. I also have the most fun drawing chicks and I get the best reception from my art that includes them in it. It also helps me get in touch with my inner minx. The stuff that I myself would probably never do out of insecurity or self-consciousness I could always have one of my bevy of girls that I draw do in a picture. Which is funny, because since the girls I draw are always so fearless and fun-loving I think some of that has rubbed off on me.
9. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Japan, definitely. I'm such a city mouse. I love the urban experience. And the cities of Japan I'm sure would provide an experience unlike any other. Plus I'm a nerd and Tokyo is absolute nerd heaven, from what I heard.
10. Name three artists who have influenced you and/or you admire.
Only 3? Crap, off the top of my head I'd say Rockin' Jellybean, El Chango and Tex Avery.
