Girls Drawin Girls in Italian VOGUE !!

GDG is super excited to share this article with you!! We were approached by Italian Mens Vogue ( L'Uomo Vogue ) to be featured in an article for their upcoming issue dedicated to "women that men love..."

Here's the article, featuring artwork from GDG members Melody Severns, Liz Climo, and Daisy Church. Many thanks to Donato Ramani for the interview!!! : D

Note: I just did the first part of the article that talks about GDG. Also, my Italian is a bit rough, and this is partly with help from Google Translate. (so please excuse any weird phrasing!)

"The icons of the fifties have never passed away. But the great revitalization of the famous American "girlies" is due to a few talented artists. They have redefined women with unprecedented sensitivity.

The Pin-up? They are always sexy and daring. But behind their mischievous look, there's always some air of mystery. Who looks at the task to discover and imagine it are Melody Severns and Anne Wallker, who work in the American animation industry. Veterans of the "Simpsons" and "The Mr. Men Show," together they have founded "Girls Drawin Girls" (www.girlsdrawingirls.com)
.

Also in this group are other artists, such as Liz Climo and Daisy Church, who have all committed to "show their talent in interpreting the concepts of feminine sensuality and eroticism." All of these artists interpret their own unique idea of "a lady's large curves" with long legs and the nose upward, which raged in the middle of last century: the pin-up. The group of "girls that draw girls" in four years of activity has already churned out two books (and another on the way), have participated in a lot of events and look forward to a productive 2010. Whoever thinks that pin-up is passe is surely mistaken.

Today, those who pick up pencil and colors are increasingly women artists, ready to assert themselves in a land that was for a long time reserved for men. They hold a view on femininity less obvious and, in a subtle game of mirrors between model representation and sensitivity as an artist, devoutly hidden.

Indeed, Walker commented "In our way to draw these figures in our art, there is always something not revealed, to be discovered. Not to mention that there is no one model. Each of us represents a different woman, of forms or looks." But also a natural look, one might add. A field of exploration of the mysteries of identity and femininity involves many pin-up artist in the States, not only GDG. Each pledged to show the protagonists in accordance with its sensitivity thus moves from fun and colorful visions of "Girls Drawin Girls" to other even stronger contours."

Charity Art Sale for Haiti Relief

GDG is organizing a Charity Art sale to raise funds to donate to the American Red Cross for the Haiti earthquake relief fund.

We are looking for ALL ARTISTS (male and female!) for donations of original art, prints, and any assorted merchandise (buttons, tshirts, magnets, etc). Since this is an online sale, it is also open to artists from everywhere!

We will be putting up a dedicated blog for the sale by no later than tomorrow (Tuesday) night.

If you are interested, please let us know! Please email gdgnews at gmail with an image of the piece, suggested price, shipping price, dimensions, and medium.

The fine print!

The way the sale will work is that we will post pieces available online with a payment link to the GDG paypal account. When a piece is sold, we will forward the shipping information on to the artist, and donate the same amount to the American Red Cross with the purchasers' information, so buyers will know their money was donated and so they can receive the donation receipt.

Shipping costs will be added onto the final price and will go to artists to help cover shipping expenses.

Any questions, please let us know, and please feel free to forward to any and all interested artists!!!

About Girls Drawin Girls:

Girls Drawin Girls ( www.girlsdrawingirls.com ) was founded in 2006 by Simpsons veteran Melody Severns, who started GirlsDrawinGirls as a way to showcase female artists working in the male-heavy animation industry. She felt it was time for these talented women to demonstrate their creative abilities and their own personal vision of sex appeal by treading upon the male domineered field of pin up art.

Since it’s conception, the group has published two volumes of pin-up art and grown to over 30 active members, whose work has been showcased in various entertainment industries, from production design, film and television animation, to graphic design.

About Meltdown Comics: Meltdown Comics (www.meltcomics.com) is the largest comic book shop on the West Coast, located in the heart of Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. Meltdown opened in 1993 and has since become one the most respected comic book stores in the world. With a sophisticated approach to merchandise and operations – and a reputation for hosting successful events in their Melt Gallery – Meltdown is a must-see pop culture destination in Los Angeles.

Carmen Mirandarth- GDG and The Vader Project

Melody Severns, Anne Walker, and Debbie Bruce of GirlsDrawinGirls created a Darth Vader helmet for "The Vader Project" ( www.thevaderproject.com ), an art show touring the globe displaying Darth Vader helmets painted and created upon by various artists. Some of the artists included names such as Shag and Gary Baseman, so I was pleased that we got the be a part of it. We decided our theme would be "Carmen Mirandarth". Darth Vader meets Carmen Miranda... can you say "Fabulouuuuuuuus!!!!!" Oh hell yeah. Enjoy! (post and photo courtesty of Melody)
